What is a ruck? A ruck is loosely defined as getting your gear from point A to point B in a backpack and on foot. Walk or run in my case does not matter. As long as you are hoofing it and making forward progress.
I'm training for a 26.2 mile ruck that occurs in April. During this ruck I have to carry gear that weighs 15 plus pounds. That does not include the water you might drink because obviously by the time you get to the end then your pack will be lighter. My pack ONLY has to weigh 15 pounds because I am a civilian, while the military, both active and Veterans will carry three times that weight.
Last weekend I did 3.5 miles with 5 pounds in a backpack. It was great. I felt terrific. So today, in my all-knowing stupidity decided to go with 8 pounds in a ruck for a 3.1 mile run with a friend.
Being winter we dressed in layers. Thank goodness! A mile in I was ready to strip off everything. Okay, not naked everything, but definitely the outer layer. Once we hit the aid station I whipped off the pack, stripped off my vest, hat, and mittens and tossed them into the rucksack then strapped it back on and away we went. SLOWLY.
Now the pack weighed just shy of 10 pounds. Have you ever lost 10 pounds and then put it back on? You know 10 pounds is basically an entire clothing size and the weight is probably distributed. Now imagine wearing that on your back while trying and not really succeeding at running. Instead of slowly jogging, which is just nuts, we (my friend Lisa and I) used the pole method.
What's the pole method you ask?
We sprinted from one light pole to the next then walked to the next pole. We kept this up until the end. I was probably faster doing that than trying to jog very slowly with 10 pounds of gearing bouncing on my back. We did it! We made it to the finish.
What did I learn from this? That I am ever grateful for Lisa for being supportive in my test run and that I was clearly not ready for 10 or even 8 pounds in my backpack. More training is needed.
Even more important. I am grateful to the men and women who serve in our military and carry 45 to 50 pounds on their backs going from point A to point B while on foot. You have not only my deepest gratitude for your service, but HUGE respect. Thank you!
I received a note from my friend overseas this week. The books that you all donated in my give-a-book, get-a-book giveaway were shipped and are now in the hands of some military folks over in Afghanistan.
Here is the email I received.
Hey Girl,
Just a short note to Thank you and the rest of your crew for the books. We received them yesterday and there were already 5 taken within the first few minutes of me opening the box.
Okay, gotta get back to it.
Thanks again!
Dewd
I want to personally thank each and every person who donated to this giveaway. Thanks to you all, a few more military people are enjoying a good book and a little bit of home.
More importantly, thank you to the men and women serving in the military and keeping us safe and protecting our freedom. May you come home soon.

I found a box of books. . .It's your lucky day!
The other day I was cleaning the house or maybe I should say shuffling stuff around from one room to the next and I came across a box. I got a little excited because I thought it was a box of bookmarks. When I opened it, I was shocked that it was a box of books.
What does this have to do with you?
Well, you've heard that old cleaning saying, "Haven't used it for six months then you should get rid of it." Something like that anyway.
I am certainly not going to throw a box of perfectly good, perfectly readable books away. I am, however, going to give them away.
Yes, you heard right. It's your lucky day. I am going to give them away.
Shouts of excitement roar across the room, state, country. "Woohoo!" "Yippee!" "Squee!"
There's a catch.
"Ohhh," whines a reader nearby.
This is not a bad catch. This is a good catch.
"Is there any such thing?"
Of course there is!!
This giveaway is a "Give a book, get a book." You have to give me a book, any NEW book you have sitting around and I in turn will give you a NEW copy of CONNECT THE DOTS.
"What are you going to do with the books we give you?" someone yelled out in the crowd.
Such a good question. I am not going to read them. I am going to give them away.
"Wow!" "What?" "Is she kidding?"
Nope. I have friends in the military and I know they could use a good book to read so I am going to send all the books I collect to the military.

There are days, weeks, and even perhaps months that the war on terror probably slips our minds or gets put on the back burner of our lives. Unfortunately, there are many people that this same war affects every day or has affected permanently.
This week a friend of mine prepares to go active back to duty and defend our freedom. He will be leaving for training and then shipped off with a bunch more men and women to a destination unknown.
Before Duane gets on a plane and travels away from his family and friends for who knows how long and to who knows where, I want to share with you how special this person is and give him a send off he won’t soon forget.
There are those people you meet who pass through your life in a fleeting moment, then there are those who do not pass through, but stick around for the long haul and become real friends, and later something more, they become family. Duane is that friend in my life. He has been there for the long haul, through thick and thin, good and bad, laughter and crying.
You see, Duane is a friend who for whatever reason fate deigned to be my guardian. Duane is the one man besides my father who has been a constant in my life, a significant influence, and the person who has an invisible link to me that can never be broken.
He is the person in my life when shit hits the fan he is somehow there scooping up the mess and putting the pieces back together. Of course, he does also contribute to that shit storm as well. Let me share a couple of examples.
I met Duane when I was fifteen when we both played soccer for our high school teams. We both looked a lot different then, but I always looked better. One night he and I went on a double-date with my parents to dinner.
Picture Duane and me sitting next to each other in a booth with my parents sitting across from us. Naturally, we should have been nervous, but my folks are cool and they had met Duane on several occasions prior to this dinner date, so no big deal, right?
Wrong!
My father waits until after the waitress takes our order and then goes for the kill. He leans in with his elbows on the table, his fingers tapping together in a teepee shape and says, “What are your intentions toward my daughter?”
Of course, I am flabbergasted, mouth hanging open, and saying in a whiney voice that I do not possess, “Da-ad.”
My mom sits back and smiles.
Then you have Duane or as most people refer to him Dewey. Dewey leans back, wraps his arm over my shoulder and says, “Well, sir, I plan on doing her every chance I get.”
That one sentence, while mortifying to me, ingratiated Duane into the bosom of my family from that day forward.
When I got divorced, Duane was the first person I told, albeit through email at the time since he was overseas. The first opportunity Duane had he called my parents and blabbed.
My mother responded to this shocking news by saying, “She what?”
Shortly after that call, my friend Duane calls me. I answer the phone and the first words out of his mouth were, “I can’t believe you didn’t tell mom and dad you got a divorce!”
I answer, “I can’t believe you told them!”
Duane is also the person who has this uncanny knack for showing up when I least expect it. Let me show you how.
One Saturday night when I was in college and out dancing with some friends I step out of the ladies’ room and who do I quite literally bump into? Duane!
This is significant because at the time I was living in Virginia, he was stationed in Texas, and we ran into each other in DC. I mean seriously, just how many times does that happen?
The weekend I bought my home, Duane called me stating that he was back and in DC. I told him, “Fly your butt up here and see my house.”
He had no clue I was buying a house. He flew up that day and the next morning Duane was the first person to see my new home. He was in half the photos I took of the house to send to my family so they could see…my house, not him.
Duane is the man who showed up at my father’s 60th birthday party as a surprise and turned my father speechless for the first time ever in his life. I’m telling you it does a woman good to see two of her favorite men turn to mush, even if they try to hide the tears by swiping at them and saying, “It must be the hot wings.”
Even now when I send Duane a text message that says nothing more than “Call me,” I know that the minute he can, he will.
Duane ~
While I love and adore you as a longtime friend, I respect and admire you for your courage, compassion, and dedication to keep my family, friends, and every other American safe. I applaud your bravery to stand the wall and fight for our freedoms.
Please know that for every day, hour, and minute that you are gone, you will be missed. You will be in my heart and in mind every day until you return home safe and sound.
Come home soon!
Love ya,
Denise
Duane,
You do know that Mom and I dearly love you and that the door is always open for you. As you might expect, we will worry about you in your absence, but we understand that what you are doing is extremely important for the freedom that has only been provided by our soldiers, you being one of them.
We will be thinking of you and praying that you will be returning someday soon to pay us the long overdue visit.
You have made us proud of your accomplishments while you have been in harm’s way.
Love ya,
Dad & Mom

For those of you who don't know, today, November 11, is Veterans Day. A day to remember and honor our military veterans. In other parts of the world Veterans Day is celebrated as Armistic Day or Remembrance Day. It's the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I and was signed on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.
No matter what you call it or where you are, today is a perfect day to say, "Thank you" to a veteran you know. Maybe you don't know him or her. Introduce yourself and thank him/her for protecting you and us. Thank them for standing the wall and making it safe for you and us to go about our lives.
While you are thanking those that you know or are still alive, remember those that gave their life. Remember those that went into battle for our freedom and didn't come back. Remember them as the hero they were and are.
To all the Veterans I know, have yet to meet, or will never have the privilege of meeting:
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping keep me, my family and friends, and our freedoms safe from harm. You are my heroes.
