Tell us what you're reading

This week I am reading an historical romance and a mystery. I'm continuing to read historical romances by Johanna Lindsey on my Kindle. This week, I'm reading The Pursuit.

Blurb: What was to be a grand adventure for Melissa MacGregor an escape from the wilds of her Scottish home into the whirl of the London social scene--seems to pale before the promise in the passionate gaze of Lincoln Ross Burnett. Though they exchange but a few words before parting after a chance encounter on her grandfather's lands, Melissa instantly knows this bold stranger is her destiny, while Lincoln realizes his heart has been claimed forever and he will never be complete until Melissa MacGregor is his bride.

But there are serious obstacles impeding the well-smitten Viscount Cambury's pursuit of glorious romance: sixteen of them--all big and brawny, six named Ian and all named MacFearson. The bane of Lincoln's Youth, Melissa's stifling, disapproving uncles are now determined to rob him of his newfound happiness. Yet he is equally resolved to confront the peril--and to pursue his exquisite obsession all the way to London... and to the ends of the earth, if necessary.

For the mysterious side of my nature, I am listening on audiobook in my morning commute to The Bone Bed by Patricia Cornwell. Who doesn't love a medical examiner?

Blurb: A woman has vanished while digging a dinosaur bone bed in the remote wilderness of Canada. Somehow, the only evidence has made its way to the inbox of Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, over two thousand miles away in Boston. She has no idea why.

But as events unfold with alarming speed, Scarpetta begins to suspect that the paleontologist’s disappearance is connected to a series of crimes much closer to home: a gruesome murder, inexplicable tortures, and trace evidence from the last living creatures of the dinosaur age.

When she turns to those around her, Scarpetta finds that the danger and suspicion have penetrated even her closest circles. Her niece Lucy speaks in riddles. Her lead investigator, Pete Marino, and FBI forensic psychologist and husband, Benton Wesley, have secrets of their own. Feeling alone and betrayed, Scarpetta is tempted by someone from her past as she tracks a killer both cunning and cruel.

If you haven't attended a mystery event...

What are you waiting for?

This past weekend we did another Mystery Event at Zorvino Vineyards in Sandown, NH. What was different this time was that we did the event 2 nights in a row. The event sold out on Saturday so Tom Zack asked if we wanted to do a second night.

Heck, yeah! And are we glad we did.

Look at the crowd!
Why are these events so successful and fun?

I believe the answer has multiple parts. In no particular order, one of the things I heard from the guests those two nights is that the price was right. For one fee, the participants received a 3-hour event that included the interactive mystery, food, a wine tasting, and of course the best part. . .a book to take home and read.

The event is interactive. There is no sitting on your duff and watching a show. You are PART OF THE SHOW. The actual mystery itself unfolds before your very eyes and ears. It's your job to watch, listen, and investigate. As a matter of fact, I overheard some women say, "Next time we leave the men at home."

I guess that tells you who was sitting on their behinds while who was actively involved.

Another thing that was mentioned to me several times was that the authors were accessible. We weren't standing behind a table. We were part of the show and at the same time always willing to stop and sign a book or discuss a story.

Merlot, Murder, Mystery, Mayhem

All of those M's describe the wine mystery event that took place at Zorvino Vineyards last Friday, August 13th.

Thanks to authors CJ West (wrote the mystery for the evening), Vincent O'Neil, Stephen Rogers, the staff at Zorvino Vineyards, and Sandown Chief of Police Joe Gordon, the 200 plus people who attended Mayhem Over Merlot Mystery event had a blast!

The event consisted of great food, a terrific wine tasting, a mystery or thriller book, and a fun-filled, interactive mystery where the patrons had the opportunity to play sleuth for an evening.

Check out some of our wannabe detectives in action!

Yes, that is a real police officer interrogating the suspects. Check out that guilty look on Ken's face as Chief Joe puts the screws to him.

Do you see the way Chief Joe is turning up the heat when he interrogates me? I tell you I was feeling the pressure.

Our murder victim - CJ West in his ghostly look.

Do you see the guilty looks on the faces of our murdering criminals? Yup, they are wearing real handcuffs.

If you missed this event, don't worry. There will be another!

Meet Da Crew a.k.a. Wicked Wino Sleuths

I had hoped to have all of the introductions done by the end of the day yesterday but alas that was not to be. It has taken us quite sometime to get set-up and settled in due to a few strange phenomenon (even by our standards), the arrival of our newest addition(s), and a nosy neighbor that kept wondering back and forth in front of the house. Fortunately things seem to have settled down a bit, our equipment is in place, the neighbor appears to have found somebody else's business to get into and we are getting used to the doors slamming on their own, the odd cold spots throughout the house and the gusts of cold wind threatening to freeze us to death. I for one am glad we have the exceptional crew we do because most people would have run for the hills by now after the day we had yesterday. Though I think it's possible that the copious amounts of Zorvino Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling that we plundered from Denise's under-counter wine cooler may have both slowed us down and calmed our nerves. (Well to be fair I am pretty sure I'm the one who drank most of the Zorvino Riesling. What can I say? It's one of my favorite types of wine.)

Let's get on with it shall we?

Heather a.k.a Hostess With the Mostest

I am Heather as you have probably already figured out if you are any sleuth worth your salt. I am an as-yet-to-be published author (unless you count poetry in Miami Herald may years ago) and the voice of the book blog Book Obsessed. I discovered at a very young age that I had both keen observation skills (much to the chagrin of most of the adults around me then) and that I am an Empath (much to my own chagrin until I learned to harness it). It is these two skills combined that have made me a natural at bringing people together and pulling off many near impossible stunts, performances and events. My day job for the better part of the past 14 years has been coordinating everything from weddings to corporate branding parties all over the world. That is how I became known as The Hostess. I am absolutely incapable of sitting still, completely obsessed with reading (well, maybe just obsessive overall), an insomniac and am curious to a fault. That curiosity kicks into overdrive when I switch on my Empathy and feel incongruent emotions from those around me. I often practice my Empathy skills on my husband and two teen-age daughters (more chagrin to be had there no doubt). One marathon 36 hour sleepless reading binge inspired me to utilize my talents and those of a few key people I had recently encounter to form the Wicked Wino Sleuths crew. Wicked is my favorite word. Wino is a nod to all of our reverence for well made wines. Sleuths is what we are.

Without further ado, please allow me to introduce you to my awesomely eclectic, increidably talented and often tipsy crew, know as the Wicked Wino Sleuths or WWS for short:

April a.k.a. Mild Mannered Genius

April was one of the first people I contacted when I began putting together the WWS crew her special talent being no small factor in that decision. She is not only the genius responsible for the mesmerizing book blog Cafe of Dreams but she is also a stay-at-home-mom of two rowdy little delights. When she is not crawling the ceiling or banging her head against a wall in a rare show of insanity, she is busy typing away at the computer. Little does her kids, husband, family and friends know of the real person lurking within. A secret life previously known to no one but her. Is she saint, sinner, savior or destroyer? Hmmm.....perhaps it just depends on the day. (I'll give you a hint: I didn't hack into this blog myself. I'm just sayin...) You can find her most often at her blog where she brings the joy of books to the world at large and perhaps while you are there, you can spots some clues as to who the real April truly is....

Jason a.k.a. Master of Mayhem

Jason blogs about writing and is an as-yet-to-be published author with six novel length completed manuscripts and a considerable number of short stories under his belt. On the surface Jason seems to be as laid back and easy as Sunday morning, but one look into his eyes and you will get a glimpse at what he is truly capable of. Thanks to my gift I was able to catch far more than a glimpse and what I saw a talent I could not pass up. He is a make things happen and let the chips fall where they may kinda guy and an indispensable member of the WWS crew. Wherever Jason goes mayhem is sure to follow! Nothing and I do mean nothing can stop him when the goal is in his sights. (I will admit that this has caused the need for some shall we say creative explanations in the aftermath before, but it is a small price to pay I assure you.) Some of the gifts he brings to the table are his ability to open any lock/safe/security system without any tools I have ever seen, an impressive knowledge of explosives, plus an expertise with both modern and archaic weaponry. Like I said indispensable. (Just one piece of advice don't make the mistake of asking him how he is able to 'open' things without tools, as others have. Lets just say he doesn't like to talk about it and leave it at that.)

Loretta a.k.a. Para-Fab Fearless

Loretta, was asked to join WWS after I read an article about her in the newspaper and I am especially glad she agreed because for this investigation her expertise with the paranormal seems more essential by the minute. She is a certified parapsychologist who is contracted periodically to work alongside the police. She jokingly refers to herself as a New Age Ghostbuster who is very “spirited”. It has been said though that one trip around the block with her quickly dispels any doubts one might have as to her seriousness when working on a case. She has been known to offer more than a few hair-raising occurrences for those who have accompanied her in her line of investigations. Loretta lives in the southern part of the U.S. with her Australian husband and her cat Lil’ Dickens. In addition to her paranormal investigations Loretta is also an published author whose paranormal stories can be found in two anthologies, all the information on her current releases as well as upcoming ones can be found on her website.

Michelle a.k.a Insatiable Sneak

Michelle is the undercover reader from Down Under behind the magnificent blog, Torch Under the Blanket Books has traveled all the way here to help solve this mystery because she is the the truly insatiable sneak of the WWS crew. (Sometimes I swear we have to hold her back when she's onto something. Hope she doesn't see this...Shhhh.) She can smell a conspiracy at a hundred paces. Her extraordinary talent for sneakiness makes her a valuable and dangerous member of our crew. She loves nothing better than rummaging around, torch in hand, into every dark chapter of people’s private lives. Anything goes when there is a mystery to solve. She keeps in good sneaky shape by knowing everything that goes on in her own house. Just try and sneak an extra biscuit while she is in the house. (Seriously, don't do it. I've tried and it got ugly.) Her husband and son live in awe of her ‘spidey-senses’ as they call them. She lives in her own slice of paradise, a stone’s throw from the beach and appears on the surface to be your usual run’a’the’mill hippy chick flower child but don’t be fooled. Her obsession with books has put her on intimate terms with some of the best super-sleuths of all time.

Last but not least our newest addition to our illustrious crew...

KB a.k.a Truth Teller

KB is the mastermind behind the Katie Babbles About Books Blog and an as-yet-to-be published author. As someone who cannot stand to be bored for even a moment KB has completed five manuscripts and is currently working on two WIP's in the Urban Fantasy and YA genres.  She generously dropped everything to join our crew as soon as she discovered we were missing a key member. KB brings a skill set that is not only useful to this particular investigation but also quite hard to come by these days unless you know just where to look. (Luckily I do) As a the palm reader that she is in her spare time most people don't pay her to much mind or off as much respect as KB also has the rare gift of knowing when someone is lying just by touching them. Of course this has not made life easy for her, especially growing up but these days you will most often find her wearing beautifully decorated and very custom made gloves. KB even arrived this afternoon complete with her very own side-kick, King Mho Fho the Demon Sheep. We are all very excited to have KB join our crew! (I might even be able to sneak a few pictures of the uh...King Demon Sheep. Ya'll just have to promise not to tell KB about it. She doesn't like to feed his already huge ego by letting him to pose for pictures, as he's a bit of a camera hog. Shhhh...)

Your first mission should you choose to accept, my dear fellow sleuths is to figure out which aspects of our biographies are completely true and which might be exaggerations. Leave your answers in the comments section.

She's Gone and We Have Taken Over

Alright ladies and gentleman the moment we have all been waiting for is finally upon us...Denise is has left for the week to gallivant around Zorvino Vineyards, ostensibly to prepare for this Friday the 13th's, Murder Mystery and Wine event. However....We're not so sure that is what she is really up to so with her out of the way with the help of my amazingly talented crew have broken into her house and set up shop here on her blog. What I couldn't tell you last week when I let you all in on the secret of our presence here this week is that there is more going on here than meets the eye. The local Sandown Scene newspaper has hired us to look into the connection between Denise and some unusual happenings at the winery in recent years.

While we're here we will be posting copies of our submissions for the paper so that you can follow along and maybe even help us figure out what is really going on. There will be several posts a day throughout the week that I am sure will have some clues in them we may have overlooked. It will be up to you to point out what we may have missed. At the end of the week there will be a prize pack that includes copies of Denise Robbins' books and some great swag we plan to pillage during our...uh...visit shall we say.

While the crew and I get ourselves settled in please take a few minutes to make yourself comfortable here and make any necessary plans to make ensure you are able to check back often and not miss a thing. I also recommend inviting some friends to join in on the hunt for clues, after all the more eyes the better. I have a feeling its going to be a one wild ride.

I'll be back soon to introduce you to our crew.

Don't forget to keep your eyes open and your doors locked.

Cheers,

The Hostess

***Disclaimer: All posts this week are completely separate from the events to take place at the real Zorvino Vineyards Murder Mystery Event. This is a guest blogging event and no clues or answers discovered this week have any effect on or relation to what will take place at Zorvino Vineyards on Friday the 13th, 2009. Pre-event pictures of the winery/vineyard

The other day, I met Kristin Callender, CJ West, and Carla Snow at Zorvino Vineyards in Sandown to discuss/plan the wine/mystery event that will take place on Friday, November 13th. David Daniel could not make it, but will be there on the 13th.

Carla is on the left in the photo, then me, then Kristin, and CJ.

Since many of you will not be able to make this unique and fun event, I thought I would share some of the photos of the function hall and winery, etc. that Kristin's mom took for us.

This is the backside of the winery and function hall.

This image shows a greenhouse with a water fountain in the works. Hm...could be a good place for a clue or a dead body.

Always wondered what a wine vat looks like? Well, here's your chance.

Here is the function hall wine bar. Don't you just love that it looks like a wine barrel?

Here is part of the function hall. All of the wood beams and the floors come from the wood on Zorvino's own 80 acres. Beautiful!

For those that cannot make the wine/mystery event on November 13th, not to worry. I'll get some photose from that evening so you can imagine it. :-)

Book signing event offers thrills, chills, mystery & suspense

Two local Borders Books are getting into the Halloween spirit a little early when they host book signings by highly acclaimed techno-romantic thriller author Denise Robbins. The Oct 10 signing in Concord and Oct. 24 signing in Nashua will precede a post-Halloween event at Zorvino Vineyards in Sandown, N.H., when Robbins joins other published authors for a murder mystery experience on Friday the 13th of November.

What makes a good villain in a mystery?

While we finish reading "A Little Murder" by Cindy Davis let's talk tips on mystery writing and the Villain.

Guidelines for the VILLAIN

In most cases, not all, the villain will be a murderer.

Intelligent

The murderer should be intelligent. A brainless killer would be no challenge and be caught within the first fifty pages of the story. On the face of things, the villain presents an impossible puzzle for the detective and the readers. The villain should be a challenge.

Amoral or immoral

What’s the difference?

Amoral means 'not concerned with morality' while immoral means 'not conforming to moral standards' or 'evil'. This is important because it may dictate how many bodies stack up in the villain’s wake. An immoral person knows the difference between right and wrong, but decides to do it anyway. An amoral person (serial killer) believes that rules are made for others, and does whatever he or she pleases.

Ego

The murderer should have an arrogant ego. The most egotistical action in the world is the taking of another person's life. Exhibit the ego outside of the actual killings. Demonstrate this ego somewhere else in the killer’s psychological make up for the reader to accept them as able to commit the crime. The villain might appear modest and easygoing, but he always hangs his clothes by order of color in his closet, presses his trousers just so, or never permits anyone to call him Dick when his name is Richard.

What makes a good detective in a mystery?

While we are reading "A Little Murder" by Cindy Davis, I thought it appropriate to discuss writing mysteries.

Let's start with the DETECTIVE.

The trick to a good mystery or any novel is to create believable and interesting characters. In the case of a mystery, the detective is the character readers will identify with first and foremost.

Rules for the DETECTIVE:

Curious

We have all heard the saying "show, don't tell"?

The best way to show that the detective in a mystery novel is the curious sort, who HAS to know the answer, put him/her in a job that seems to attract curious types. The obvious examples are private investigator, police detective, and investigative reporter. The not so obvious might be a photo/journalist, a scientist, a researcher, a librarian, or even a computer hacker (my personal favorite). Not only will the readers accept the detective as the sort who will chase down answers, but also these jobs often lead to fascinating plots.

Abilities

Consider your detective's occupation. Will it allow time out to go solve a puzzle? If the detective’s job does not allow for time to unravel the mystery of his best friend’s death then there has to be a credible way to excuse all the time the detective is away from his/her “real” job. Perhaps he/she is on vacation. Maybe the detective is on holiday or a vacation. Keep it real to be believable.

The detective will be in personal danger at some point in the novel and will therefore have to be strong. Showing the detective as regularly performing some physical activity like jogging five miles a day, swimming ten laps in a pool before bedtime, or taking a dance class will give he or she the appearance of being strong.

Why is this necessary?

When the detective faces the danger of having to kick a gun away, fight an armed assailant in frigid water, or wriggle out of constraints it will be easier to believe that he/she is capable of performing such feats.

Remember when you first started writing and one of the first things you did was interview your characters, get to know them in-depth? In a mystery, it is helpful to know the hobbies and skills the detective is involved in and will HELP in solving the mystery. Stamp collecting may not be of much use unless the mystery revolves around the death of a small town stamp collecting storeowner. Is she a computer whiz? Does he teach a psychology class once a week at the community college?

Friends of the detective are also useful. Having a pal on the police force or at the Town Clerk’s office can come in handy. A neighbor who is a lawyer or a computer geek can be of use to a detective at different times.

Bloodhound

There has to be a reason the detective is compelled to find the solution. In police procedurals or private eye novels, this is easy. The detective is hired to do the job. That is not exactly compelling. Perhaps the detective needs the job because she just opened her private investigative firm and wants to prove herself as competent.

One of the best ways to have an amateur sleuth continue the hunt for clues and the answer is to either make him/her a suspect, or have someone he/she care for a suspect. If the police have determined that he must have "dunnit", then no one else is looking for the real culprit. Another effective motive is if the detective or someone he/she cares about is in danger. She has to proceed with the investigation, regardless of the danger.

Intelligent

The detective in a mystery novel, whether amateur or professional cannot bumble his/her way through investigation and just happen upon clues and answers. This character is going to solve a puzzle. It must be believable that he can unravel the mystery.

Tune in tomorrow when we discuss the VILLAIN.

Speaking of suspense. . . how does suspense differ from mystery?

In this week's Book-A-Week Challenge we're reading a suspense novel by Carla Neggers.

Speaking of suspense. . . how does suspense differ from mystery?

Have you as a reader wondered this? As a writer I know I sure have! Afterall, is it not my job as an author to know and understand what I am writing so I know who will want to read my book. (shh. . .I think that's called knowing your target market.)

Barbour Publishing gives a pretty clear definition of the two genres. “A Mystery is set up as a maze to be navigated by the protagonist or solver. A Suspense is best represented as a coil that tightens in around the protagonist. A simplified generalization would be to say in a mystery, the protagonist is on the offensive-actively searching and solving, while a suspense puts the protagonist on the defensive-running and evading the villain as time runs out.”

If that's not enough information, I thought I would share my take on the difference between mystery and suspense. Feel free to share your own thoughts.

Mystery:

A mystery contains a puzzle to be solved and may revolve around any crime, not necessarily a murder victim, though a murder victim is common.

A mystery focuses more on the hero/heroine solving the crime.

In a mystery, the reader identifies with the detective (the person solving the mystery).

In a mystery, the protagonist already has the skills he or she needs to solve the puzzle.

A mystery is a puzzle where the answer is hidden until the end with many red herrings along the way.

The reader has to distinguish between real clues and red herrings, and the protagonists solve the problem/crime by the end of the story.

In a mystery, information is withheld.

The hero or heroine in a mystery is looking for suspects.

Readers of mysteries are looking for clues.

Suspense:

Suspense involves a character in peril and has more of an element of danger.

Suspense can have an antagonist who is "out to get" either the hero or heroine and is the one creating the problems. The antagonist may or may not be known until the very end.

In a suspense, the reader identifies with someone at the mercy of others.

Romantic suspense focuses as much (or nearly as much) on the developing romance between the hero and heroine as it does on the suspense plot line where the plot's twists and turns eventually threatens the hero’s/heroine's life.

In suspense, the protagonist learns new skills to survive.

The suspense plot line focuses more on disarming the danger than solving a puzzle.

The suspense novel hero or heroine faces a cycle of distrust.

Suspense is just that . . . Keeps the reader on the edge of the seat.

In suspense novels, information is provided.

The hero or heroine in suspense looks for betrayers.

Readers of suspense are expecting surprises.

We are reading Murder Came Calling by Nora LeDuc for the Book-A-Week Challenge. On Sunday, July 19, we'll be posting an interview with Nora and she will stop in to answer and respond to any questions or comments you leave behind so don't forget to come back after reading the book.

EBook formats ISBN: 978-1-60313-437-8
Trade paperback ISBN: 978-1-60313-438-5
Nora's site: http://www.noraleduc.com

For those of you who don't know, Nora is a friend of mine and someone who has influenced and helped me with my writing career since I joined the NH Romance Writers of America back in 2003.

Of all the books that Nora has written and there have been many, I believe 7 published at this point, this is my favorite. Why?
Because I love the hero (Sam) and heroine (Annie) in this story. These are two characters that you can't help but fall for.
Okay, enough about what I think. On with the book information.

Blurb:

When her mother’s body is discovered at a lakeside cove, Annie Townsend can’t avoid the possibility her father may be a murderer. She launches her own investigation and teams up with prison-toughened Sam O’Brien, a man her family loathes.

Caught in a web of her own suspicions and guilt, Annie finds that, even worse, she’s attracted to Sam and must protect herself from a man branded by his past and imprisoned by his hardened heart.

Although he’s long been proved innocent of murder, Sam knows the world shuns and despises him. His attempts to live in peace away from the prying press are doomed. When Annie catapults into his life, he finds the opportunity to prove himself worthy to love again.

When the end is near

Have you ever gotten close to the end of a WIP and just wanted it over? Or you're so close, but you get writer's block? Or, my favorite, when a character from your next story creeps into your current WIP?

Yup! That's where I'm at now. I had a self-imposed goal of finishing my current WIP by December so it was completed and out the door to an editor before the first one is released in January. I am soo close, I can see the end, and I want to reach the finish line.

I had writer's block on Sunday, but today, thanks to my critique and brainstorming session with Nora I managed to write about 1500 words and get the latest chapter finished in my WIP and the start of the next. Hopefully I'll get the next chapter completed tomorrow morning. Keep fingers crossed.

And yes, I have this one character that I just adore. He's so cool and got this sexy southern drawl, and whenever he makes his way into my stories he manages to take over. Well, Jake has done that a couple of times while I've been trying to wrap up this story. He's become a PITA! :-)

The problem is, Jake wants his own book. Now I'm feeling the pressure to really finish this book so I can write his story. The funny thing is, I started another story with him in it for NaNoWriMo, only its not a romantic-suspense, it's a kid's mystery. I came up with the idea when I took a children's writing course over the summer and it's kind of stuck in my head.

Well, if I actually succeed in finishing my WIP soon (like maybe this week) then maybe Jake will have two stories, the kid's mystery and a romantic-suspense. Greedy guy!
