What's on a book cover?

Now we all know that in spite of what we say, "don't judge a book by its cover", that we all do. Speaking of which, let me tell you a little story.

I had this call with a man for a radio interview.
Anyway, the guy is a marketing guy and when we chatted about the cover of my book, he stopped me and said, “Wait. You have a woman’s butt on the cover of a book?”
Of course, I answered, “Well, it’s not her naked butt. She’s wearing a bikini.”
He went off. He thought it was terrific! He said, “I could make you famous on that idea alone.”
HA!HA!
So then I said, “The second book will probably be similar only she’ll probably be in a tight-fitting snow suit.”
He laughed and said, “OH MY GOSH! A series of butts on book covers. That’s genius.”

I have to say, I never realized there are no “tushes” on book covers. But (no pun intended) it sounds like it was a winner of an idea.

CONNECT THE DOTS

Yeehaw!

Yesterday, I was given a bottle of champagne and decided to save it and celebrate when/if I sold book 3, CONNECT THE DOTS. My favorite hero!!

Well, it just happened tonight. I got the email from my publisher and the contract.

Now I am dancing the happy dance. . .champagne will be tomorrow night!!!

NHRWA meeting today

Fun, fun, fun!

If you ever want a good laugh, just attend a NH Romance Writer's meeting. Think you're hearing voices in your head? Nah, it's just the writer in you wanting out. If you're not sure, just attend a NHRWA meeting. You'll find out you're in good company.

Plus, think of all the young (not necessarily in age) writers you can and will meet. There are a bunch of us that are just ready to bust out. It's only a matter of time. You can honestly say "I knew her when." And vice versa.

Oh! Next month I will be the speaker. Great. . . tough act to follow Carla Neggers. But, I shall try.

First, I have to come up with something interesting to talk about. Notice, I said "interesting". The last thing I want to do is put people to sleep. And, I would really like to do something that had a lot of interaction between all the attendees. So, I am hereby opening this up for any terrific suggestions. If you were going to go see a writer give a spiel on some topic, what would you want to find out?

I know what Jennifer will say. . . the journey of a novel. Cool by me, but tell me what that means. :-)

Book Exposure and Free Book

Only two days left to leave a comment at Jessica's blog and possibly win a free copy of my book IT HAPPENS IN THREES.

Check out her blog at http://bookexposure.blogspot.com/

Good luck!

Booksigning Reminder for Saturday, March 14

For those of you in the area and who want a good breakfast along with a fun book to read, I will be at Sammy J's Breakfast Cafe at 144 Main Street in Salem NH from 8 AM to 10 AM Saturday morning signing my book IT HAPPENS IN THREES.

Stop by, have a cup of coffee or some Italian French Toast (my personal favorite), and get a book to read.

Hope to see you there!

After that, I'm off to see Carla Neggers talk at NHRWA and hopefully get a copy of her latest book (signed). If you have not read Carla. . .you definitely should! She writes terrific romantic suspense. Gee, do you think I consider her a mentor? :-)

You know you're a writer when. . .

It's not the day you decide to write a story. It's not the day you finish your first or even third manuscript. You're not a writer when a publisher accepts your manuscript. You're not even a writer when the book hits the stand and you can hold it in your hand.

Although all of those events make you feel good, make you believe in your skill or talent, make you feel like you accomplished something major in your life. And you have! But none of those things make you a writer.

It's the culmination of all of those that lead up to the one event that marks you as a writer. For me, that was yesterday. For me, that was having two women I barely know who purchased my book come up to me at different times and tell me that they love my book.

One woman came up to me yesterday at breakfast and with a smile on her face and cheer in her voice exclaimed that not only did she read my book, but she loved it. You should have seen and heard the surprise in her voice. She proceeded to exclaim that she had never read a romance before, but was thrilled that she had read my romantic suspense because she liked the mystery. Not fond of a lot of swearing, she was happy to see that there was a minimum in the story. She also loved the fact that she could tell when it came to the computer stuff, I knew what I was talking about and that I described it so she could understand. She loved that she got to use her own imagination to get a feel for the characters and they weren't spelled out in every detail. She cannot wait for the second book. :-)

Yesterday afternoon when I met my friend Nora for critique, another woman who had my book approached me in the ladies room. (Yes, us women do those things.) Anyway, drying her hands, she told me with a great deal of excitement she had read the first 135 pages of my book the previous evening and didn't want to put it down because it was so good. She said it was even funny and went on to tell me the funny part she liked with Jake and Ruby in the bathroom. She could not wait to read more.

All the 5-star reviews could not do for me what those two ladies did. Those two ladies not only made my day, but let me know I had achieved something I didn't even realize I hadn't until yesterday. When I started writing It Happens In Threes, I knew I wanted to be a writer. Yesterday. . .I became a writer!

Thank you.

Nothing like a good critique session

Late this morning, I met my author friend Nora Le Duc at Panera to critique our works in progress. She just returned from Florida, the lucky dog. I mean that in the nicest way. Mostly.

Anyway, we chatted about her trip. She had a marvelous time! Chatted about politic stuff. Ick! Ate some good, warm soup on a miserably chilly day.

Then we got down to writing. It is amazing how someone else can pick up on nuances in a story that you the writer cannot catch. Afterwards, I came back home, put in the edits, and then was able to tweak a few spots Nora suggested which gave me almost another 1000 words. Yes! I have achieved the 30000 mark in my story.

Plus, thanks to Nora's and my Dad's effort, I concluded that they were both slacking on the job. As I read back through the story, I realized that we all forgot a piece of the story that happened a little earlier but then fell off the face of the earth.

The heroine had picked up an envelope, stuffed it in her pants and gee it never appeared again. And that was after she had been shot and taken a shower. HA! That letter must be pretty nasty by now. :-)

Long story short, well, not that short. Critiquing and editing right afterwards is a great way to motivate the writing.

Forgot to blog today

Wow! There are days where time just gets away from you. This morning I got up and after working out (yes, I do that most days for the energy), I made some chocolate lollipops for the Made in NH Expo. Then I made some chocolate books for this Saturday's book signing.

After that, I ordered business cards which seemed to take an inordinate amount of time. Then I moved on to crafting interview questions and tweaking my bio for an upcoming radio interview.

Finally, I did a little bit of writing . . .actually editing in my WIP by putting in the tweaks dad sent back to me.

Between all these things, I emailed friends working on schedules to get together, updated my salon appointments in my calendar which somehow got completely hosed, and spoke to recruiters about various jobs and a possible interview TOMORROW. But that will only work if the VP can meet me up here since I'm already committed in the middle of the day.

Then I realized I hadn't blogged today so here I am. I should probably be writing, but obviously the creative juices went elsewhere so now I'm deciding if I want my hair stylist to put more blonde or red in my hair. Either way, I need something new. You ever feel that way?

Anyway, tomorrow will be all about writing and critiquing unless I go on that other interview.

KILLER BUNNY HILL

Okay, forgive me if I mentioned this already, but did I tell you I found out that KILLER BUNNY HILL is scheduled for release in July?

I emailed my editor last week to ask what she thought of CONNECT THE DOTS, but of course she'd only had it a few weeks and hadn't read it yet. Not to worry, she knows I have no patience. :-) She just laughs at me when I ask such questions.

Anyway, she said that CTD wouldn't be released until next year anyway until several months after KBH. So then I was like. . . WAIT! Does that mean you know when KBH is coming out.

I'm not allowed to hold her to this but she said KILLER BUNNY HILL should be released in July 2009. WOOHOO! Two books in one year.

And yes, I'm shooting for two books next year too. If I ever finish my current WIP.

What undergarments do your characters wear?

Like the topic? What can I say? This morning this question struck me.

What do your characters wear for undergarments? Do the womem all wear thongs or "granny panties"? Why? Is it because that's what you the writer wear or is it because of something your character has revealed?

And if your character sleeps in a G-string, have you ever? I mean seriously, have you ever worn a pair to bed and woken up with the string some place it just should not be?

Do the men wear "tight whities", Speedo type underwear, or what? Again, why? Especially the Speeedo type. Ick! I would gag if one of my characters did that. That's like going to the beach and seeing these bigger men walk around in the "barely-there" swim suit thinking they look sexy when in fact their wife or girlfriend should tell him to go put on those white socks and flip-flops because then his outfit would be complete.

Seriously. How many of you describe that part of your characters wardrobe? Including what color are they or the type of material? Does the heroine always wear silk or does she occasionally wear cotton?

Is there ever any humor involved when you show these undergarments? Like what?
Like does the hero get caught going commando? Who catches him. . .the heroine?

These are all very interesting questions. Let me know.

Book Exposure

Remember last week I told you about a blog called Bookexposure and the author Jessica James who was a newspaper editor? She also writes historical fiction. Truly a woman of many talents.

After she helped me with my press release for IT HAPPENS IN THREES, she has given me many more tips on how to expose my book for others to know it exists.

The other day, she sent me an email to let me know that she was going to feature my book on her blog. If you haven't checked out her blog before then, please check it out from. . .

03/09/2009 - 03/14/2009: IT HAPPENS IN THREES will be featured on Bookexposure, http://bookexposure.blogspot.com/.

Description Writing Prompt

Today the prompt is to spend 20 minutes describing a smell and what that smell makes you feel. For example, honeysuckle or fresh cut grass, or even a dead body.

Again, feel free to share what you come up with.

Dialogue Writing Prompt

Since the inner monologue really kicked off my creativity (actually kind of scary what came out), I thought I would pass this one on. A dialogue prompt.

This one you get 30 minutes to write a dialogue between two characters using appropriate speech differences and movement. Here's the idea. . .

Write a dialogue in which each of the characters has a secret. Do not reveal the secret but make the reader intuit it.

Feel free to share what you come up with.

Inner Monologue Writing Prompt

I'm taking a creative writing course and this week one of the writing sessions had us starting with a prompt and then taking 10 minutes to write an inner monologue.

I thought I would share the prompt with you all and see if it could ignite any creative juices. Good luck!

Write a brief inner monologue beginning with the words, “What I could never tell you…”

Feel free to share what you write.

Win FREE books

About a week ago I found this very cool site that gives away books.

http://www.bkgiveaway.com/

Each week they change the books that they are giving away. All these books are donated and signed by the authors. Check them out!

Starting today until next Friday morning, my book is available to add your name in to get a copy free. Yes, absolutely free!!

Who doesn't want a free book?!

Editorial submission to Post

Well, bummer!

The Washington Post rejected my editorial on the stimulus. What's the deal with that? We can publish everything the politicians thinks but not what we, the middle class, think.

At least my ediotrial even offered a solution to the issue as opposed to some of these politicians who just whine about it but never offer up anything.

Anyway, not to worry, I won't be posting any political comments on my blog. :-)

Press Release

Although I have been writing. . .at page 85 as of this morning, I also did spend a little time on the publicity thing.

I found this wonderful person named Jessica James and her blog at http://bookexposure.blogspot.com/.

Jessica is an author and a newspaper editor with 18 years experience. She knows how to craft a press release and how to address an email to an editor to get their attention.

I worked with Jessica through email the past three days where she asked me a bunch of questions and in the end, I have a press release that I have already sent out to a local paper and the blurb to attach to submit to a newspaper editor to catch their interest in possibly doing an interview.

Seriously, if any of you are having troubles with getting that press release done, check out her blog and contact her. I highly recommend her!

You Write - but do you Read?

Every week you manage to do some kind of writing. Whether it is 100 words or 1000 words, it does not matter because it is all good.

Do you also read?

Me, I read at least 1 book a week and sometimes several just depending on the length and obviously how good it is. This week I have managed to read three, oops four books. Thanks goodness for excellent writers. My TO BE READ pile is dwindling. I now only have one cabinet of books to read.

How many books do you read? What was the last book you read and when?

Do you read the same kind of books that you write?

I write romantic suspense. I usually read romantic suspense, mysteries, romance, and even true crime. When I do research for my books, I read anything and everything, but have to admit I tend to shy away from reading a whole non-fiction novel.

Why do you read?

Relaxation? Escape? Learn more about your craft?

Writing - but not my WIP

Yesterday I did manage to write about another 2000 words getting me to page 82 in my WIP. Yea!!

Then I could no longer concentrate and decided to write an editorial with regards to the current economy and the "stimulus". On a normal basis, I am not a political person, but - yes, I do live in New Hampshire.

Anyway, this whole situation has me in quite the tizzy and the TV media around it pretty much drives me nuts. Realize, I rarely watch television (prefer books), but occasionally I will go out for breakfast and you have no choice but to listen to the so-called news program. In thirty or sixty minutes they drone the same comment/opinion into your head at least 4 times throughout the program. No wonder everyone is depressed.

So, I wrote a 2 page editorial on our economic situation from my POV and submitted it. What do you think? Will someone at the newspaper actually take the time to read it? Or will it end up in the recycle bin? Will they go a step further and print it? Or is it only the politicians whose voice counts?

Personally, this is why I write fiction. :-) Fiction will make me laugh, cry, jump out of my seat, fall in love, smile, and believe that anything is possible.

Page 75

Woohoo! 19000 words and page 76 today. I am feeling good!
Lots of action and movement.

If I can keep this pace up, I should reach page 100 by the end of the week.

Monday and writing

Ah! I actually got up this morning and started writing. I'm close to the end of a chapter so I feel very good. If I can get at least another chapter or two written today I will be ecstatic. My goal for this week is to get to page 75 in my WIP. If I get to page 100 well then I will be doing some heavy celebrating. :-)

After the last two weeks of very little writing, this week is all about my story. I'm going to ignore any thoughts on marketing effort (well, not completely, but mostly). I'm going to forget about homework until the weekend. All this writing I have to do for my class is killing me, not to mention the reading before the writing. The stories kinda suck (for lack of a better descriptive word). I even sent one story to my father to read and I believe he used the same term. Hehe! I don't feel so bad.

Happy writing!

More Snow

More Snow?!

Could Mother Nature be anymore cruel? Just when I was loving the fact that I could see snow under my hammock, the weather decides to dump even more snow on us.

Where is spring? How am I to write about warm weather in NH when all I see is white and dirt (sand). UGH!!

Here is a question for you. What does the weather do to your writing? If it rains do you stay inside and crank out pages upon pages? When it's hot and beautiful outside do you go and play in the heat or do you stay where the air conditioning is and write, write, write?

Publicity Revelation

I don't remember if I have written about this in the past or not, but let's talk publicity.

How am I supposed to write and do my daily grind type stuff if I also have to work on the publicity for my book?
I'm not talking about the actual book events and interviews and such things as that. Please, those are the fun and can be very enlightening. Plus, you never know what story idea may come from it.

I'm talking about the actual creation and submittal press releases. Even though I may be able to write one where do I send it? There is no clear list for a new writer that says, "Send here."
And there are no instructions on how and who to contact to get media interviews.
To top that off, as a novice author with a small publishing house how do you arrange book events?

I'm sure that it can and has been done. But, dang, if that does not take a great deal of time and research. I have spent days trying to find information, and although I know I am internet search challenged, I still have not found answers. For example, how do I send a press release to the New York Time, Washington Post, or Boston Globe? Better yet...all major newspapers across the US and on the web?

Let's face it, without good publicity that book will remain in a warehouse or on a shelf (if it's even in the bookstores). That begs another question. How to get the bookstores to carry the book?

If you have answers to these questions, please feel free to post them here for others.

Now, knowing that I am not a marketing guru or a salesperson, I decided to locate and contact a public relations firm. Actually, I contacted 3 of them. Can you believe that not one has responded back?? That begs the question of why? Is it because my book is a romance? Hey - don't say anything. There were several agencies I checked into that specifically did not work with "genre fiction". No accounting for taste. :-)

Perhaps they don't think my book is worth the effort because my publisher is small? So what. They'll only get bigger...and already are.

And knowing that I have a second book to be released this year you would think, "Yeah, this is a no-brainer. We should work with this writer."

So...bottom line is this. I want my writing to be my career. How do I get there? PUBLICITY
How do I get that publicity?

Yup, I'm in the background waving my hand saying, "I have no clue."

Finally writing again

After three days of being sick and all the computer issues of last week, I am finally back to writing. This morning, I managed to write two chapters in my WIP.

Yea me!

Of course, it helps that my cats had me up at the crack of dawn...make that before dawn at 4 AM. That was okay with me because I proceeded to workout and listen to a good audiobook while I did.

Laurens Library

I think it was a couple of weeks ago that I told you all about my grandmother going to her library to get a copy of my book but it had been checked out.

This morning, while I'm sitting at home sick, I rummaged through a week's worth of mail and found a card from my grandmother. She sent me a card congratulating me on my book and included a small article from her local newspaper that listed my book and that fact that I am Maxine's (grandma's name) grand daughter.

I noticed that the library has a website so I went out there to check it out and sure enough they listed the same information. So cool!

Check it out: http://www.laurenspubliclibrary.com/laurens_public_librarywhats%20new.htm

One of those...2 days

SO...you ever just have those days where nothing can go smoothly??

I HATE THOSE!

Mine started when I was trying to get my backup server to give me some old files. It did not want to cooperate. And of course this is at 6 in the morning and lasts until at least 9. Then I was finally able to get to some backed up files but copying them to where I wanted so i could use them took forever.

My poor cats went scurrying away everytine I yelled at my computer. :-)

Then I had to install some software. Yeah, okay, this should be a walk in the park. Not so. Because of all the security I have on my computers and network it can be a major pain.

Oh, there were other issues beyond just those but those were the biggest. Do you think I got any writing done? NOT.

Then the next day I my friend Nora emails me about meeting a friend of ours for lunch. Holy cow! I completely forgot. No problem. I decide to sit down and do some writing before I have to go.

I'm all ready to write but I need to get some information on the internet. I'm waiting, and waiting, and waiting...NOTHING. Continuously! I couldn't get my email anymore. UGH!

I, being the smart girl that I am, called the cable/internet company. We went through the issue and it was identified that my cable modem had died. The thing is less than 2 years old!! So I schedule an appointment for them to replace it because it is their modem, but guess when that will be...MONDAY. Flippin' 5 days away.

Again, I being the smart chic that I am, go out and buy a cable modem because I can install it myself. And after lunch with my friends that is exactly what I do. But of course that cannot go smoothly. For those of you who don't know...it has to be done in a very specific order. Sheesh!

On top of that, when I finally do get it set up I still have to call the cable company so they can register the machine in their system so I can use it to access the internet. Do you think that was easy?? Heck, no! It took 5 phone transfers to get to the right person. Unbelievable!!

Anyway, I finally get a guy who was very helpful and does whatever needs to be done on their end and I'm set. Right?

NOT! I still had no internet access. But, I'm no dummy, so I keep the guy on the phone with me until I know it works. I mention something about the router and he says "Router?" In the back of my mind I'm think "DUH!!!!"

So I have to unplug the router and count to ten (love that) and then plug it back in. Woohoo!!!

At 5 PM, I finally had access to the internet. At that point, I was fried, brain-fried.

So...do you think I have written a word in 2 days?? Nope. Nada.

BUT - after all that, I think I should write a book titled, WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS :-)

First Booksigning

Saturday was my first booksigning at Big Easy Bagel in Manchester.

How did it go?

It went great! Some of the writers I know showed up to support me and many local patrons. One gentleman came by to get two books. Apparently, he had been waiting for two weeks for the event to get them.

I had the books and chocolate and everyone who bought a book took either a chocolate heart or a chocolate book away with them as well as a signed copy of the book itself.

Laurie (the owner of Big Easy Bagel) gave me a table in a corner where I set up my book for display on a stand that my neighbor gave. I also managed to get internet access so I could show my new book trailer to everyone as well.

Overall, it was fun and I am very much looking forward to this coming Thursday for the next one. For those of you that are in the area...it's going to be at Margaritas in Salem, NH. Hope to see you there!!

Article in Newspaper

Ever wonder if people actually read the articles in the paper? When the local paper put the article in about my new book, I was not certain if anyone would read it. Well, they did.

How do I know? Besides having several people tell me in-person when I was out to eat, I received a couple of emails congratulating me on my book. One email in particular was really great.

A local woman emailed me and asked if I would be interested in talking with her and her daughters about book writing and candy making. Uh, yeah, of course I was interested so I invited them over to my place.

The other afternoon, Kris and her daughters came over and we sat around eating scones that Kris made and talked about writing then we cleaned up and made chocolate lollipops with a Valentine's theme.

Book Trailer

Good morning! I've got cool news. . .Jeannie finished the book trailer for IT HAPPENS IN THREES and it is awesome!!

Check it out at http://www.deniserobbins.com/trailers.html

or on you tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBTLTtJY9V0

Send me a note and let me know what you think.

How to write a love scene

I started to write an article on "how to write a love scene", but decided before I go too far that I would see what people needed to know.

The mechanics of writing the love scene are important but my impression from listening to a lot of other writers is that the issue in writing the "love scene" is that it is intimidating and scary. Like you as the writer are putting yourself on display.

So I thought I would try to encompass how to not be bashful and write the scene that your characters want. Does anyone have any other things they think should be mentioned in the article?

Oh! I know, like what do you call the body parts? HA! I so love that. Look at it this way. . .what does your boyfriend, spouse, significant other call "it"?

I wrote a love scene the other day that was different than any of the others I have written so far. I know, I know, you're like. . . "How can it be different?"

Well, I called this a slow and lazy love scene because it starts when the heroine is sleeping and the hero just kind of responds to her body pressed close and moving against him. Nature takes its course. Thank goodness!

Website Updates

Here's the thing about a website. . .you have to keep updating it.

Over the weekend, I added two articles that people had requested. One on passive voice - my favorite and the other on description. Check out the Resources link on my website. I have another article ready once I put in the edits so maybe next week there will be an article on Hooks.

Jeannie updated the contact form on my site so you have to check that out too.

On the books page, I added part of Christy's review of IT HAPPENS IN THREES and a link to the full review on her site.

How does everyone else keep up with their website and still write?

Book Review

This morning when I checked my email, I found a link to a review an author did on my book. First, it was a complete surprise. Second, it was nice to know that someone read the book. :-)
Third, she liked it!

I mean, I like my book and so does my editor/publisher, and of course family and friends, but it's nice to see that someone outside that circle read and enjoyed the story.

If you want to read the review, check out Christy's blog at http://www.christytilleryfrench.com/

Now, here is the question of the day. . .how much do reviews (no matter good or bad) influence a reader's selection? What are your thoughts?

And whose reviews do take to heart? Any particular review sites you visit before going out and buying a book?

Inspiration

Where do we get our inspiration?

I was reminded the other day by a friend of mine (who I have known since high school) that I used to leave him notes on his car and now I'm writing fiction novels, in particular, romantic suspense. He thinks it is hysterical and awesome. :-)

That same high school friend is also my inspiration behind the spy side of my stories. I love the intrigue and suspense.

I also incorporate the technology side of my life into the stories as well. Think about all the cool gadgets that intelligence people use nowadays.

Then, I leverage the places I've been and the adventures I've tried, like scuba diving with my ex. My first book's adventures take place around Florida and Hawaii where we did some amazing diving!

So. . .if you're stuck on a story idea take a look around you and at yourself. What have you done, seen, experienced? What have your family and friends done? Know anyone in the military? Get a copy of their resume and then do some research on what all those acronyms mean. :-)

Then figure out how you can take that New Hampshire amusement park worker and turn her into an undercover agent tracking . . .what? HA! You tell me.

Book in Library

Cool note.

Last night my parents gave me a call to tell me that I hit big time. Well, in their minds I have and this is why.

My grandmother went to her local bookstore in a small town in Iowa called Laurens and the book was actually listed as being there, but someone had checked it out.

How cute is that!

I told my parents that I would be sending my grandmother her very own copy so she didn't have to go to the library and wait for it.

Just the fact that it was in a library so soon floored me. Neat!

Tips for a successful book event

Now remember, this is my first book so I am a complete novice when it comes to this promotion stuff. Yeah, okay, I'm a novice when it comes to most anything related to the books except reading and writing.

Does anyone have any tips on what to do or not do for a successful book event?

Like, do I have to dress professionally? ew! What can I say, I am jeans girl.

Or do I set up a table and sit behind it? That seems kind of impersonable and I always like the events where the author reads an excerpt from the book - or maybe from an upcoming book.

Send your ideas, please.

Signed a book last night and it wasn't even a book event

Good morning!

Last night, I went to dinner with a couple of my neighbors. We went to Margaritas for Mexican. My neighbor's husband never had Mexican food until I moved into the neighborhood. Now he likes it!

Anyway, while we were there, I dropped off the book event flyers and the posters my publisher had made for me for the manager who arranged the upcoming book event.

Instead of Andrea (the manager) coming over to my table, Pedro (AKA PJ, another manager) came over to the table and sat with us. He asked if I had an extra copy of the book for him. HA! Of course!!

Then he asked me to sign it. See, yesterday's post was very timely. I managed to put a quick quip in it and told PJ that he had two weeks to read the book.

He asked if there would be a quiz. Well, duh, yeah! How else will I know if he actually read it? But, I told him he had to read it so that in two weeks, he would be telling everyone how great the action and suspense was, not to mention how hot the, uh, romance was. :-)

In two weeks, we shall see if he knows his stuff.

Got my books!!

I received my books from my publisher today. Wow! They look terrific. They even put these little shark glyphs in the scene and POV breaks. NICE!!

OH! And they sent me posters of my book cover as well as a framed cover with a dollar bill. :-) Now is that creative thinking or what?!

I already had to get a box to send to my parents and family...oops, still have more of those to do.

So here's a question of the day. What do you write on the inside of the book when you are signing it besides the obvious, your name?

I went through my stash of autographed books and some of have cute quips, some just say Warmets Wishes or Enjoy the book and then the signature.

Anyone have any thoughts? What do you prefer?

Finished Manuscript #3

Good morning!

Well, last night I managed to achieve my first New Year's Resolution and completed my third novel. I still have the last few chapters that have to be edited by my dad and nora but other than that, the story is complete. Yippee!!

Thanks goodness because book 4 started forming in my head this past weekend. Two whole scenes that I could not get out of my head. I need to actually come up with the actual plot but I'm close.

Got up this morning and typed up the first two pages.

Writer's Block and Article

Well, I'm at that inevitable point in my current WIP where I'm so close to finishing that I cannot seem to write. Don't ya just hate that?!

Anyway, I'm looking for some ideas on the next article to write in the hopes that if I write an article maybe I will be able to clear my writer's block.

I will take any suggestions, so send them over.

Nashua Telegraph - Author's Forum

On Friday, I received an email from the Nashua Telegraph and a form to fill out, kind of a paper-based author interview. Very neat!

Anyway, look for my book and me to be featured in the Nashua Telegraph's Author Forum section.

It will also announce the upcoming booksignings.

My mom got the book before me

HA! My mother ordered IT HAPPENS IN THREES off the Internet and received her copy before I received mine.

She called me Friday night from my dad's cell phone while he drove so she could tell me the news. She was so excited that she told my father to read the dedication to her while we spoke.

Uh hem! Dad was driving the car!! :-)

Anyway, they finally read the dedication (later)...which was to them. All these months and they never had a clue so it was a great feeling to know I choked up my own parents.

Yesterday, I spoke with my dad and he was telling me that when the guys arrived in the morning to work on replacing their kitchen tile my mother was right there showing off her daughter's book.

Don't you just love family!! I love mine.

How to write more often

So we all have day jobs or families, even daily tasks that have to be done. When are we supposed to get any writing done??

Here's a tip - okay a couple of tips:

1. Instead of taking a book to read with you when you run those errands that require you to wait for a period of time, like a visit to the vet or a doctor, take a pad of paper and a pen. Write! I even carry the last few pages of the section I'm working on with me just so I can refresh my memory as to where I left off.

2. Block some specific time aside just for your writing. Write! I have for many years set aside an hour every evening to read so why not do the same for writing.

3. Say you are used to your schedule and then it shifts, you no longer are taking that night class on belly dancing on Tuesday. Fill that time slot with. . .take a guess. . .writing!

4. The biggest tip of all is to stick paper and pen in your car, your handbag, your backpack, underneath your sofa. Why? Because when you feel the urge, you will have something there that you can use to write with. Heck! It may not be a chapter, or a paragraph, but it may be the story idea for your next novel.

For the record, I even have paper and pen with me when I'm on the treadmill. I can't exactly read the writing, but I'm getting something down to jog, no pun intended, my memory later.

The beginning of my WIP came to me as I was driving to a NHRWA meeting. Yeah, can't exactly write while driving. Okay, I could but it probably wouldn't be pretty, cars piled up on 93N. I can see the headline now, Local Author Writes Her Own Death Scene. Anyway, as soon as I got to the meeting spot, I pulled out notebook and pen and wrote the first few sentences down. After that. . .novel three is in the works!

The Perils of Research

How many of you have to or need to do research for the book you are writing?

On my current WIP, I had to do some research just to get started because I know very little about how the Intelligence organizations work.

Well, in doing so, I found some great and interesting information. The peril for me came when I would look up one thing that led to another and another, and even another. All of it became too interesting that I forgot the "scope" of the book.

I didn't forget the book because I have been writing like crazy, but I forgot what the hero/heroine's goal was, where I wanted to end up.

I got to about page 175 and became confused. (Okay, that may not be because of my story.) Anyway, I had to revisit the story and get an answer to one basic question. "Why was this one guy dead?"

It actually took me 2 days to state why.

Why did it take me that long to answer the question?

Because all the interesting facts I found became a puzzle in their own right so I wanted to put those together rather than my book's puzzle.

Thankfully, once I had the answer to that single question, I could answer all the other questions and move the story forward. Of course, I did have to go back and tweak a few chapters and even added another one in the middle yesterday.

Moral of this story. . .BEWARE of the perils of research in book writing.

Children's Book and Contracts

Late yesterday afternoon I returned home and found this big envelope on my door. After getting it inside and opening it up, I saw these papers from a publishing company and was confused. (happens every once and a while)

As far as I knew the only publisher who has any of my work is L&L Dreamspell, my publisher for my romantic-suspense books. I had completely forgotten that I submitted my children's story before Thanksgiving.

I reached back into the envelope and found a letter. An offer letter to publish my book. Woohoo! Yes, I was extremely excited. . . until I read the contract.

Why?

Such a good question. I'll tell you.

Because the bottom line is that they wanted me to front the money to publish the book and they would in return spend 6 times that in actually getting the artwork (B&W), get it printed, then market it to online bookstores.

As soon as I read that I have to give them money. . .my balloon popped.

If I wanted to pay someone to publish my book (self-publish), I could do it for a lot less than they quoted me.

Moral of this story is. . .READ THE CONTRACT. Don't sign and send anything off unless you know what you are getting into. Also, research the publisher to check on their reputation. One good place to get some of that information is http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/

Books with pages missing

What happened to quality assurance?

In the past year, I have purchased two books that have had complete chunks of pages missing. Not because someone went into the bookstore and ripped out pages but because the printer screwed up.

Last night, I sat down to do my usual reading (I try to read at least 30 minutes a day or more), and when I started reading, it seemed the book jumped right into the story. Now I'm all for the story starting off right away, no backstory to bore me to tears, but wow...this was good.

Then it got bad. I read about 50 pages and all of the sudden I was reading the same exact thing that I read on page 1. I flipped back to verify and sure enough it was the smae page. BUT, it was not only that page, it was those 50 pages completely repeated.

OK, here's where I admit I'm a blonde. It wasn't until that happened that I actually looked at the page numbers and found out that the book that started off with a bang - started on page 45. Yes, what I assumed was page 1 was actually page 45.

I actually am missing pages 1-44 of my book.

This is the second time this has happened to me in a year, so, I ask you, "Where is the quality assurance?"

Did this happen with all the books or just the ones in the same print run? Does this happen with e-books?

I'm very curious as to why this happens and what can I do to get the rest of the book that is missing.

Sweet Spot in Writing

Yesterday afternoon, I completed writing the interview with myself/press release. Not sure how entertaining it will be, but my editors have reviewed and cleaned it up so at least it's grammatically correct. :-)

Actually, the editors really only tweaked the beginning. Which brings me to my topic.

Have you ever noticed you have a sweet spot in writing and then there are other areas/times where you can't seem to find the rhythm. (i know what ran through my head when i said this :-)

Anyway, where is your sweet spot or lack there of?

For me, I suck at the beginning of a story. When I say suck, I mean the writing isn't as solid and fluid. I usually end up rewriting/majorly revising the beginning. Once I get started and the rhythm takes hold, look out!

It's the same thing for me when I write certain characters. It seems one character, when I write him or her at first, doesn't pop out at me while the other character does. You know, like whenever you write that one character, BAM! everything comes out perfectly and his or her personality is obvious.

My sweet spot seems to be after chapter 1 and sometimes chapter two. For whatever reason I'm no longer hesitant and the story flows from my had to my fingertips and out onto my computer.

When I write an article, like my self-interview, it seems the beginning paragraphs are always the roughest.

What do you do about those rough areas?

Do you keep beating yourself over the head trying to make it better and never get there? Do you call on a friend/editor to read and advise? Or do you shove it aside and start over or move on?

Working on an interview with an author - ME!

Last night, as part of my effort to self-promote I started to work on an "interview with the author" that I want to send to the local papers.

I got a few questions down then started to wonder what kinds of things would people really want to know about me and my very first romantic-suspense novel.

So, here I am, requesting that if anyone has suggestions to feel free and post a suggestion or send an email from my website.

The one question I know, is the question I have already received from many friends. . . "Did you pose for the cover?"

Do you honestly expect me to answer that? HA!

What to do with my new book cover?

Well, I can tell you what I did last night. I printed out several copies of the cover and took it with me to my salon appointment. Of course all the ladies know my first book is coming out so they were ecstatic.

Such a tremendous feeling to know that something you've worked years on achieving is just around the corner!

Beyond that, I now have to create a "Press Kit". No clue what that is other than one of the things will be a Press Release and somehow my new book cover plays a part in this.

Plus, someone suggested that I get bookmarks made with the book cover art on it and the ISBN and my website listed, not to mention my next novel.

Woohoo! Let's get this show on the road.

If anyone has other marketing suggestions for use of the book cover art please let me know.

Holiday Writing

How much did you actually write this past week between shopping and family time?

Me? I managed to squeeze in a one lousy chapter...not that the chapter was lousy. :-) As a matter of fact, my father, who is my first round editor, didn't even make any changes to the chapter so it couldn't have been terrible. (Right, Dad??)

I also managed to write a brief article on hooks; what they are and how to write one.

So I did get some writing done but if I'm going to meet my first New Year's resolution of completing my current WIP by February then I better get a move on.

New Year's Resolution and Writing

With the New Year just around the corner, I think it is time to start think about a New Year's Resolution related to writing.

Last year, I had written down (yes, you must write your resolution down) that I wanted to get published. Wow! I did!

I also listed that I wanted to finish my second book. Whew! Did that with one month to spare. Bonus! I actually had it accepted to be published.

Plus, let's not forget that my one and only poem was published. That never even entered my mind when I wrote up my 2008 resolutions.

In 2009 readers will be looking for 2 books by me. It Happens In Threes and Killer Bunny Hill

Now for my writer's New Year's Resolution for 2009. You'll notice I am sharing this with all of you so my feet get held to the fire.

1. Finish my current WIP by February for submission. (And of course, hopefully published.)
2. Finish the teen novel I started. (No date on this one...just do it.)
3. Get one of my articles related to writing published in a magazine by September.
4. Get a DRAFT of a new novel to the end, but not necessarily polished by December.

Whew! That's a lot to accomplish but between you and me, if I want it bad enough I will get it.

Share some of your New Year's Resolution related to writing here. Remember to write the list down and if possible give everything dates, even if just the month as this will give you added incentive to do it.

Next article idea?

Desperate Salem, New Hampshire Residents Get Creative

This is what I wrote yesterday to make myself feel better about the lack of power!!

Desperate Salem Residents Add a Little Humor to Their Plea for Power

After five days without electricity, one of Santa's little helpers gets creative. One resident who lives down West Duston Road in Salem, NH decided to take the initiative and leave a note for National Grid and ask for electrical poles.

How was the note delivered?

With Christmas-colored spray paints and two pieces of plywood tied to a street sign, one West Duston resident wrote a note.

"National Grid, we need poles ? Forgotten :-( ."

In the holiday spirit, the note also contained an artistic rendition of a holiday wreath.

Did this letter to National Grid help?

Uncertain that the creative communication did the trick, the many phone calls from the residents of West Duston, or time and patience, but as of Tuesday, National Grid was finally present and working to address the issue.

Even though the residents do not have power yet, the desperate, displaced, and stinky residents want to thank the unnamed author of the note and National Grid for paying attention.

Ice Storm and Writing

Good morning everyone!

So I have been without power due to an ice storm for 5 days now. The only reason I can even write this blog is because I am sitting in Panera where several other people are trying to get a break from the bleak cold and darkness of our powerless homes. Yesterday I had to throw all food out of my refrigerator and freezer before the smell killed me. Ugh!

Beyond the obvious, this storm and the after effects has put a hurting on my creativity. Even though I have lots of time, I don't have any desire to write due to the simple fact that all I want is my power back and the situation is all encompassing.

And since I tend to write better with my computer this has been an even bigger challenge when you have no power and the battery life on a computer is minimal. Not to mention that without power there is also no internet access...ergo Panera.

The worst part of all this is the rudeness of the poer folks when you call to ask if they have a clue when my street will be set. The kicker came for me the other day when I saw that all streets around me had power including the dang amusement park next door (that's not even open for business) and my lonely street is just waiting.

Last night someone even painted a sign and set it on the very well lit street corner that asked, "National Grid, did you forget about us?" That sign actually lifted my spirits because I was glad to see I was not the only one upset by their lack of response. :-)

Anyway, my third novel was on quite a roll but now I'm trying just to hit 50000 words by end of year instead of completing the novel. Oh, and impossible to research when you have no internet access.

I'll try to write again soon and hopefully with good news of power having been restored.

Wahoo! Good News for Book 2

Ha ha!! I am doing the happy dance. Know why? Come on, guess.

Nope, too late – I’ll tell you. Cuz my editor just signed Killer Bunny Hill.

February Speaker Ideas

In February I'll be giving a talk on some subject for the NHRWA monthly meeting. Let me know if anyone has some suggestions on a topic that should be discussed.

I'm already considering passive voice or maybe planning your next story idea, or maybe even some basics on how to use Microsoft Word.

Is there anything else people would like to hear about? Feel free to send me suggestions!

And again, if you've never attended a NHRWA meeting, check it out http://nhrwa.tripod.com/

Articles - Passive Voice

One person from my writer's group suggested a couple of writing articles for my next effort. Thanks, Jennifer!

Last week before I took the 5 hour drive to NJ, I did manage to get an article written on Passive Voice. I'll post that soon on my website. This may be an option for me when I do my speaker bit in February for the NHRWA.

If you've never been to a NHRWA meeting you should check it out. http://nhrwa.tripod.com/

Anyway, one thing you should know about passive voice that I found very interesting is that it is the number 1 thing new fiction writer's do wrong. Can you believe that?

But you know why? Because passive voice is how we speak.

There's some trivia for you.

Writing and Family Visits

Sorry for taking so long to write. Last week had to drive to NJ to visit some family. And of course that means that writing is next to an impossibility and getting on the web is a real treat.

What do you do when you take a vacation or visit with family? How do you keep up with your writing schedule??

New Website is up!!

Wahoo! My new, suspenseful website is live!!

Check it out at www.deniserobbins.com

Let me know what you think.

Thank you, Jeannie for being such a great designer. Now we're on to the book trailer.

Magazine/Newsletter Article

I want to write another magazine article on writing but haven't come up with any great topics so I'm opening this up for discussion.

What would you want to read about in regards to writing?

It could be something you struggle with as a writer, or maybe something that drives you crazy as a reader, or the topic could be something you can't find any information on.

I'm open to suggestions and I'll do the research. Let me know. Thanks!

Happy THanksgiving!

Quick tip for Thanksgiving. . .Do all your writing before you eat the turkey.

Otherwise, you'll be dozing while you write or writing something that will make absolutely no sense.

On my publisher's site

My publisher, L& L Dreamspell is updating their website and I'm now listed. Sorta. No book cover art yet. . .but there is a placeholder. Check it out!

Last days of NaNoWriMo

Okay, so I haven't been the best at paying attention to NaNoWriMo. Shame on Me. My friend Nora is cruising though and her story is excellent.

Me, because I focused on finishing my WIP I didn't get too much done. BUT after I came up with my next story idea and in between research (a lot of research), I did manage to write 8300 words on my new novel. And I still have 4 more days to go. Not that I will have the novel done in 4 days, but I will be into a very good start. So far I'm averaging about 2000 words (give or take) a day or 2 chapters a day. That's not bad considering the research I've had to do on human intelligence gathering and the reading of body language.

My next blog I'll post some of the body language traits I've learned. Maybe you can use them in your next book. . .or in your interactions with people. Very interesting stuff.

Okay, off to write.

Next Story Idea

After two days of frustration I finally figured out, at least at a high level, my next story. Sometimes it's best to just step away from the computer and everything else and go with old-fashioned paper and pen. I found a quiet place to sit and just let thoughts, questions, and ideas drift around in my head, writing all of them down as I went.

As I did this the story started to unfold. Not in any detail, but enough to keep me motivated on this next story and actually do some research into it. The sad part is, that there isn't much readily available on HUMINT (human intelligence) or the Intelligence Community as a whole. And, oh my gosh, if you read some of the information that is listed on sites it is so convoluted and indirect you can't even figure out what they are actually saying.

No fear. This morning I woke up and had the storyline more clearly outlined in my head. So today my job will be do try and write a rough outline and more than likely write chapter 2. I'm one of those writers who really can't outline more than a couple of steps ahead. Believe me, I've tried.

I think someone should come up with a good outline template for a romantic-suspense novel. Not just the Beginning, Middle, and End stuff you see all over the place.

Anyway, I'm to plan, outline, write, and do more research. If anyone has suggestions on good sites on HUMINT collection, feel free to post a comment here.

First Review of IT HAPPENS IN THREES

I'm working on the content for my website, so the other day I contacted my editor and asked if she had received any reviews back yet. What Lisa sent me was the review that will be on the book cover. See below:

Denise Robbins' delicious debut novel, It Happens in Threes, begins with a bang and doesn't let up. Fueled by a heady mix of action, suspense, humor, and romance--and a couple of thoroughly engaging protagonists--the book kept me turning pages (and hoping that the wild, sexy ride wouldn't end!). IHT marks the launch of a career to watch.

New Story Idea

Hello everyone!

As you know, as of yesterday I finished my second manuscript. Yippee for me, right?

Yes, well, now I need to write the next story. And when I say need, I mean "lookout honey, where's the chocolate before I shoot you" kind of need. It's an addiction!

That doesn't mean I didn't get up this morning and write. As a matter of fact, I wrote 1200 words this morning, the start to my new manuscript. The problem is, I don't have a clue where I want to go with this story.

I have 2 great characters and they just met, but what is going to happen? Here's the other thing, I write romantic-suspense. I really like to read and write romantic-suspense so it needs to be one of those kind of ideas. Plus, my hero has already been seen in my two previous books and he works for a secret government agency.

Now, I did just skim through a bunch of gosh-darn (midwest accent showing through) articles on the net about how to sit down and come up with several ideas. HA! Are they kidding or what? I can't force an idea. Kinda isn't the definition of "idea" if I can PLAN it. Sheesh!

So what I need is inspiration and brainstorming. Any suggestions?

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

My Manuscript is complete!

Yeehaw! Yes, this is me doing the happy dance!! I officially finished my second manuscript this morning and it feels EXCELLENT! Okay, it felt so good I actually teared up because I DID IT!

Now, I'm waiting hear back from my critique friends as to what they think and then send to my editor. YES! Throw my hand in the air in a sign of triumph.

What do you do after you complete a manuscript?? Go to Disney World?! NOT!
You edit. Yes, you've been doing that all along, but now you do the nasty search for those passive voice sentences, and as my father like to point out (too many contractions).

And yup, already did that today. Let me tell you, 318 pages takes a long time to go through to make certain you caught all the bad stuff. Hours and hours. And even after I went through once, I had MSFT Word do the grammar check on it and of course it still found some leftovers.

Anyway, big sigh. I feel good, no great, no flippin' fantastic! I did it, I did it!! Be jealous.
Now I gotta come up with the next in the series. :-) My hero Jake is going to take center stage. Stay tuned.

What do writer's drink?

I'm sitting at Panera waiting for Nora so we can critique our work and hopefully brainstorm me through the ending of my WIP. As I sit here drinking my Mountain Dew, I started to wonder what do other writers drink when they're in the creative spirit. For me, there are only two things that boost me along. Mountain Dew during the day or a lesser caffeine soda if MD is not available, and a Corona Light when I'm writing at night.

Occasionally I'll drink a Caramel Apple Spice from Starbucks when I can get it, but that's not as often.

What do the rest of you drink when you lock yourself away to write?

The Home Stretch

Had an amazing day of writing yesterday. Wrote several chapters and in the last one kind of peterd out so this morning I had to revise it. I do believe it is much better.

But now, I'm literally on the last or second to last chapter and I haven't a clue of how it should go. Every time I start an idea I end up not liking it. I think I've started this chapter at least 3 times.

I even tried going for a drive, thinking that would clear my mind enough to get past my writer's block and get it done.

Is this happening because the end is near, I'm in the home stretch, or because I should have planned this?

With my last book I didn't have this big of a problem, although I did write it twice. I had an original idea but during the actual writing of it, the chapter took on a life of its own. The girls in my writers group straightened me out on that one so of course I fixed it.

But this one is killing me. I need the hero and heroine to catch the bad guy and the heroine to tell the bad guy she loves him. I mean come on! How hard can it be?

OK - enough ranting. Any suggestions on how to get past this would be greatly appreciated.

Revisions

How do you manage your revisions? You know, like you write a chapter then realize it pretty much stinks so you edit, tweak, or completely rewrite the thing.

For me, it depends. It depends on if it's just tweaks. If it is then I'll make the changes and save it as the same file.

If I am doing some cutting (like big chunks/paragraphs) then I have a separate file for my WIP cuts. That gives me a nice file to go grab stuff that I may have written but ended up not using for one reason or another.

If it's a complete re-write I generally save an old version of the manuscript and then use the new version from that point forward so I can refer to the old in case I wanted something. Plus it gives me a copy of my work at least to a certain point in time so if other backup methods fail I will at least have something.

So why am I mentioning this topic? To re-inforce the fact that you should never delete or throw away anything you write. You never know when it could be of use. How would I know this?

Besides listening to many other writers, I have just learned this lesson the hard way. I wrote a chapter then decided I hated it so I pretty much rewrote the entire chapter. But do you think I can find it so I can borrow pieces of it for a chapter that I am now working on?. . .NO.

And now here I am, having to re-create some of the work I had previously done. Learn from my mistakes.

Pets and story ideas

I know - great title for a blog, right?

I have these two cats (pictures are on the left) and they just love to play. This morning when I was making the bed, one of them decided to attack me toes from underneath the bed skirt. Talk about a heart attack!

Of course, after the initial shock, I teased the little guy until he got tired. :-)

Then I started thinking, as I often do. Wouldn't someone (not a cat) under the bed waiting to do evil be a great part of a story? But then I thought, yes, a cat would be cool because you could use that as the prelude to a person being under the bed.

First event a woman comes home at the end of a day, exhausted, she kicks her shoes off, and gets undressed standing next to the bed and the cat attacks her foot. Yes, the woman jumps, but then laughs, and plays with the cat.

The next time though, she thinks it's the Fluffy the cat and thinks it's funny until the person under the bed grabs her ankle and pulls. . . Where it goes from there is up to you. Have fun!!

Have you ever noticed...?

Have you ever noticed that the busier you are the more creative you are?

On Sunday when I planned to sit with the football games on television and do nothing but write and eat homemade soup I couldn't write more than two sentences.

Yesterday, in between phone interviews, making homemade soups, and getting ready for my Saturday Holiday Open House (kicking off the shopping season with chocolate and friends), I managed to write over 2000 words (not a lot, but decent). Plus, I revised the last chapter I had written and even if I do say so myself, it is way better. Much more tension andit jumps off the page.

SO why did this happen? I have no clue, do you?

Anyway, it's after 5:30 AM my time and I have to get up and get ready for what I hope will be another productive day of writing and other. Gotta see if I can get my hero's chapter to jump off the page. Wish me luck.

Found my blog

For those of you who found my blog, I apologize for the move. In honor of my new website getting ready to come on board I'm moving everything to my name (Denise Robbins), in case you didn't know where you were. :-)

That way everything should be in place when the site is ready.

I apologize in advance but please visit my site at www.deniserobbins.com and you will be re-directed until all the new stuff is live...hopefully soon!!

Couldn't Sleep - More Marketing

Last night while my body wanted to sleep the sleep of the dead, my mind decided to take a detour to the amusment park.

Sound silly? Maybe it's a funny description but it really does explain what happened. So what did I do to curb the spinning of my mind?

I came up with and emailed an idea for a magazine article to Susan Caldwell, Publisher/Founder of www.applaudonline.com magazine. It's a magazine all about NH and MA women. I met Susan several years ago when we both were starting our businesses, hers the magazine, and me www.sweetsbydenise.com.

Anyway, I decided to reach out to her and propose doing an article on NH Romance Writers. I believe in our group and what we do and would really like to see others become aware of what we do and who we are. I want to spread the word.

If you have a local magazine or newspaper in your area, propose an article/idea. Start telling people about you, your writing, and the other writers who support you. What's the worst that could happen? They turn you down, okay, go to the next one.

Ha! It's kind of like trying to get published!!

When the end is near

Have you ever gotten close to the end of a WIP and just wanted it over? Or you're so close, but you get writer's block? Or, my favorite, when a character from your next story creeps into your current WIP?

Yup! That's where I'm at now. I had a self-imposed goal of finishing my current WIP by December so it was completed and out the door to an editor before the first one is released in January. I am soo close, I can see the end, and I want to reach the finish line.

I had writer's block on Sunday, but today, thanks to my critique and brainstorming session with Nora I managed to write about 1500 words and get the latest chapter finished in my WIP and the start of the next. Hopefully I'll get the next chapter completed tomorrow morning. Keep fingers crossed.

And yes, I have this one character that I just adore. He's so cool and got this sexy southern drawl, and whenever he makes his way into my stories he manages to take over. Well, Jake has done that a couple of times while I've been trying to wrap up this story. He's become a PITA! :-)

The problem is, Jake wants his own book. Now I'm feeling the pressure to really finish this book so I can write his story. The funny thing is, I started another story with him in it for NaNoWriMo, only its not a romantic-suspense, it's a kid's mystery. I came up with the idea when I took a children's writing course over the summer and it's kind of stuck in my head.

Well, if I actually succeed in finishing my WIP soon (like maybe this week) then maybe Jake will have two stories, the kid's mystery and a romantic-suspense. Greedy guy!

Soo Close

I am so close to finishing my current WIP. So close that I have brain freeze. I had all day yesterday to write, was looking forward to it, and the only thing that came out was 2 sentences. UGH! Talk about frustrated.

Today I'm meeting Nora LeDuc to critique our work and get some brainstorming done.

Wish me luck!!

More marketing

David Daniel, fiction author, and English teacher, forwarded me an email today with information about an Open Mic night at UMASS Lowell. The university did this last year which is what inspired me to write my first poem and then submit it and it was published...(see previous post).

Anyway, you don't have to read a poem. You can read an excerpt from a work-in-progress. What an excellent idea! Here's a perfect opportunity to check and see if your hook works.
Again, look at how many people will hear/read something you've written and now know your name.

Hopefully, if you do something like this you remember to take your business cards which will not only include your name, book name, but your website URL and the ISBN number for your book.

Remember, no one can or will promote you as well as you promote yourself. TELL EVERYONE!

How else to get your name known as an author

I was just sitting here trying to plot through my current WIP (obviously it's not going too well, otherwise I'd be writing there and not on my blog). :-)

As I was sitting here trying to write, I received an email from Tammy, the editor of the NHRWA newsletter. She dropped me a quick line to let me know that other chapters have used an article I wrote for last month's newsletter. First, that was great that Tammy kept me updated. Second, that's so cool!

Now I'm sitting here realizing what a wonderful way to get your name out there and to get more visitors to your website and ultimately to your books.

For those of you who are part of a writing group, I recommend you write a short article on a writing subject that interests you. Remember, if you're interested in it, someone else is too. Besides, think of the marketing benefits.

As a matter of fact, another author several months ago suggested to time getting a magazine article or two published with the release of your book. Hm...makes sense.

Book in a month update

Well, yesterday was not the greatest writing day. I only wrote about 300 words.

Today, I had very good intentions to do my usual of going to Panera to write. Instead, I prepped for an interview and talked with a friend on the phone. By the time I actually wrote anything I was sitting in the lobby of the company where I had the interview. And of course, I only had my current WIP printed out and with me and not the last part of my NaNoWriMo novel, so I worked on that.

And now what's my excuse? I'm in the zone of writing for my WIP and hate to break it for more than sending a quick "hello" to you all.

Hope you're doing better than I am. But at least I'm writing something.

NaNoWriMo Update

Day 2 - I wrote 1591 words, Day 3 - 1044.

How's it going for everyone else?

I'm getting ready to meet a writer friend this morning who is also participating in NaNoWriMo. We're getting together to critique what we've written so far that way we can either tweak what we've written and thereby add more words :-) or help with tweaking the plot to move forward (always my issue). Of course Nora LeDuc, my author friend can write way more words than me in one sitting. Ugh!!

Quick Quip

Last night I went out with a friend of mine for dinner and afterwards she asked me to stop by the post office so she could drop a couple of letters in the mailbox. The mailboxes were the big metal ones that sit at a curb and you can pull up in front of them, slip the envelopes in, then drive away.

Of course it's not that easy. :-)

We pulled up right behind a car and waited for him to slide his mail in. And waited. And waited. His hands would go sneak out the window and then back in again. Not once did I see any paper.

Finally, I turned to my friend and asked her, "Do you think he's having trouble ordering his Venti Caramel Apple Spice?"

Seriously, I thought the guy was trying to order food or something. No, I did not honk. We were having too much fun laughing at the fact that it took forever. Plus, he finally did figure out how to put the mail in the mailbox. Of course when it was our turn we knew what we wanted so our order didn't take nearly as long. LOL!

Now, how could you use that little event in a book? I can think of a couple of ways.

Your hero or heroine could be in a hurry but just have to do this one little errand. That could lead to all kinds of scenarios. . .they're late for whatever they were in a hurry for, like getting to a stakeout, or a meeting with a bad guy. Or maybe that little detour and lengthy wait in line gave the bad guy an opportunity to ambush them. Any ideas spring to your mind?

Official start of NaNoWriMo

Good evening everyone! Today is the first official day of nanowrimo. How many words have you written??

So far today, 1093 words for me. Not the greatest, but definitely not bad since I am still working on my current WIP as well.

I've been trying to get into the www.nanowrimo.org site and update my word count but I have a feeling the site is very busy with all the other writers. That's a good thing!!

Let me know how you're doing.

Cool news!

Last week, on my way to meet my critique group, I stopped by the University of Massachusetts - Lowell to pick up their book, "The Offering". It's a book of poems they publish every year. Last year, thanks to David Daniel, fiction author and English teacher, I decided to submit a poem I wrote in his class. The editors accepted it and it was published in this year's "The Offering". It was just released 2 weeks ago and if you haven't picked up a copy you should.

www.uml.edu

So after I picked up my copy, okay several copies. I mean I have to give one to mom and dad. :-)
After I picked up those books I went to meet with a couple of writers. We went to one of the local Irish Pubs, Old Court. Food is terrific and music is Irish as well as some of the fare.

Anyway, it was a great evening! First, it was excellent for me because I had just worked on those chapters several days before and it gave me an opportunity to see if I was on the right track, and if not to fix it before I blew through even more writing. Plus, I got some plotting help. Sometimes having guys to critique with is so interesting. David and Steve both came up with the next event in my book. I couldn't believe what they came up with. It never even dawned on me but what an event and surprise!

HA! Got your interest, huh? Well, you'll just have to wait for Killer Bunny Hill to be published. :-)

Okay, so besides that plot adjustment, I also had something even more exciting happen. David Daniel (www.daviddanielbooks.com) - go check out his site and his books, offered to read my ARC (remember that stands for Advanced Reading Copy) of my first book IT HAPPENS IN THREES and provide a blurb for the book. Now how can a girl get any happier? Hm...hopefully he likes it.

If David reads this. . .thanks very much! And thank you and Steve for the terrific plot idea.

November is National Novel Writing Month

If you didn't know November is National Novel Writing Month. . .now you do.

What exactly does that mean?

Every year thousands of writers sign-up to write as many words (50K) as possible in a month, ergo a novel in a month.

If you haven't done so, do it now. What have you got to lose? If nothing else you'll get some words written and hopefully a start to a new book. Go for it!

http://www.nanowrimo.org/

4 walls caving in

Ever go through those days when you feel like you've been cooped up and the walls are caving in, but you've got to do some writing? Or have those days when the family, friends, or pets just won't let you do any writing? Maybe you can't turn off your brain from thinking about the job, the house work, etc.

What do you do?

For me it depends on the time of day. Some mornings I get up and drive to a relatively close Panera. They open at like 6:30 AM and they have free WiFi so if I need/want internet access it's available. I get there, grab a Mountain Dew (not a huge coffee drinker unless it's a flavored cappuccino) and half a bagel or pecan twist, then find a booth, boot up the laptop and go to town.

If it's at the end of the day and I need to unwind in order to write I tend to go to a local restaurant like Margarita's or Billy's Bar & Grill. Neither of these places have WiFi, but they have the requisite booth, great wait staff, and an environment that gives you the ability to forget everything else, relax, and write like a crazy woman.

I went to both places yesterday and it was fantastic! I revised one chapter and it's much better (even if I do say so myself). Then last night I managed to write another chapter. And as soon as I quit chatting on my blog I'm about ready to attack the next chapter before I meet my class tonight.

What do you do when you need time and place to do some good writing?

OH! One added benefit to going to some local places is that people get to know you and when they find out you're writing a book they're very supportive and excited for you. Try it!

Website

How important is a good website?

The answer is always mixed. Some people firmly believe in the value of a website while others could care less.

Now I'm a computer person by day so for me a website is very important. Anytime I want to get information I search the internet. If I want to find out all the books a particular author has written I go to the web and check for their site and then others.

The website I have now is based on the title of my first book coming out. Well, I've recently been working with a woman (Jeannie Ruesch) on re-doing the site and her opinion is that my website should be under my name. After speaking with her on this I did the research and she was right. Most authors have their website under their name, not their book title.

People are going search for my books based on my name, not my book title.

Anyway, back to the original question. How important is a website?

Look at it this way, it's a relatively cheap way to advertise/market yourself and your work. Plus, it will be seen by way more people on an average daily basis than a flyer on someone's car, or an ad in a local paper, or even in the yellow pages. A website is international.

From my perspective a website is a HUGE marketing tool. Use it. Take advantage of it. But, do it right.

This is where Jeannie comes in. She's helping me make the site right. Stay tuned for the unveiling soon. In the meantime, check out Jeannie's site at www.WillDesignforChocolate.com.

Writing Critiques

Good Morning!
As I sit here getting ready to go on a job interview I thought I'd write a quick note.

This past weekend I met with some other writers to discuss our current Works-In-Progress. I tell you they are the best. When I'm stuck they criticize and brainstorm and then you walk away energized to write.

Wednesday I'm meeting some other writers to do the same thing. This group is a unique mix of men and women (my other group is all women). I like this because you get that "other" perspective, which is especially helpful for me when my current WIP is more of an action-adventure/romantic suspense. I love it when the guys say, "whoa. no guy would talk like that." hehe! :-)

Plus, there's usually someone who has knowledge on a particular topic you may need that can pony up some details. Way better to get firsthand information than reading it out of a book or off the internet.

My goal for this week is to come up with an outline to finish the last of my WIP. Keep your fingers crossed.

If you haven't taken the time to join a writing group you really should try one.

OH! and remind me to tell you about my trip to Barnes & Noble bookstore.

Writer's Group Meetings - What do we talk about??

This past weekend the New Hampshire Romance Writer's Group met for their monthly meeting. If you've never attended a meeting it is truly worth it.

Why?

Because it can be a hoot. We always talk about the "business" side of the group and upcoming events which are listed on their website at http://nhrwa.tripod.com/, but more importantly we talk about things that we're struggling with.

For example:

The PITCH - the infamous 5 to 8 minutes you get with an editor or agent. How the idea of that meeting makes your palms sweat and you want to wet yourself due to nerves. This past Saturday we went around and helped each other get that 1 to 3 sentence description of what you want to say to the editor or agent so they ask for more. That would be kinda like a hook!!

One of the members spoke up when people were talking about how nervous they were. She said the editor pitch is kinda like sex. "Even if it isn't great, you still had sex." Funny thing, she's right. Look at the pitch as an opportunity and if you never take it you won't get any further. Even if you blow it (which kinda isn't possible because you're selling yourself and your writing - what's not to love), but let's say the agent/editor doesn't ask for any more, you still took the step, learned from it, and now you move on to the next one and you won't be so nervous.

BTW - I highly recommend any of those workshops on "how to write a pitch". They're usua;;y very good at narrowing down your long-winded spiel, or beefing up your hook.

I say go for it!! And good luck!
